Down in the Subway

Down in the Subway - Melanie Hope Greenberg Melanie Hope Greenberg's illustrations are colorful and vibrant. The story is simple but very pleasant: a woman magically enlivens a boy's hot subway ride by pulling things such as a cool Island breeze out of a bag. After reading the book aloud a few times it has become easier and easier to read it with expression. The writing is not horrible but its rhythms, its music, seems to be just a little off at times, which diminishes its power. Some images really strike a chord though and the woman and the contents of her bag are Caribbean. I can imagine basing a writing assignment on the idea, letting another country inspire the bag's contents or even changing the location from a hot subway.
